Apple has unveiled a new product that has left the tech world stunned: the Mac Classic II Pro. Set to launch exclusively in the UK as part of a “heritage computing” initiative, this reimagining of the beloved 1991 Mac Classic II blends vintage charm with cutting-edge technology.
According to a leaked press release, the Mac Classic II Pro features:
• A 9-inch Liquid Retina Display – retaining the original compact form factor but now boasting true-to-life colours and 5K resolution.
• Apple Silicon M4 Chip – for unparalleled performance, ensuring your HyperCard stacks run smoother than ever.
• Mac OS X (Classic Edition) – a brand-new operating system that combines the elegance of System 7 with modern macOS security.
• FloppyDrive AI™ – a virtual floppy disk system that lets you “insert” classic software from the cloud.
Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, Ivor Byte, stated, “For years, people have asked us to bring back the soul of computing. This is not just nostalgia; this is innovation with a smile.”
Rumours suggest Apple will offer a limited-edition rainbow-coloured “Jony Ive Signature” model, featuring a single USB-C port that “pays tribute to the simplicity of the past.”
LMUG has already secured a prototype for next month’s meeting, where members will get hands-on experience with the Mac Classic II Pro. Attendees will also get a free download of ClarisWorks Pro Max—a modern reworking of the classic productivity suite.
What do you think—will you be pre-ordering one?
